On Friday, October 9th 2026, a mass shooting taking 10 lives took place in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. On the east side of the city, 2 women were running door to door in distress, asking for help. They knocked on a resident's door screaming for help, the resident, identified as 45 year old Matthew Stone Sr, proceeded to open fire at both women. Leaving them in the street, lives already taken. 

Stone proceeded to open fire on 7 other people, Stone's wife, his 2 sons and 1 daughter who was due to give birth this past Monday, as well as the grandchildren and the unborn baby. Stone then proceeded to take his own life on the second floor of the house after taking the lives of 9 others, making him the 10th victim in this mass shooting.

An emergency app alert was received at 4:53pm that day. Police reports state that they arrived on the scene within 2 minutes of the alert and began to make announcements over the PA system on the police cruisers. 2 minutes later, the home was surrounded by law enforcement with no way for the gunman to make an attempt to escape. The Erie Police SWAT was notified and dispatched around 4:56pm, arriving less than 10 minutes after the dispatch call arrived. 

As the investigation began, the negotiation team arrived around 5:53pm. Erie officers still had no clue as to what occurred inside the home to the full extent. At 7:12pm officers finally made their way into the home, deploying flashbangs, as well as sending a robot and a drone into the home. After 13 minutes, police discover the 5 year old boy and the 22 week old girl on the floor. SWAT teams entered the home afterwards, finding the daughter, wife, and two sons also on the floor throughout the house.

Around 8pm, officers located the gunman with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and a .4 caliber handgun on his person.

Investigators say they still have no clue as to what or who led to Stone carrying out the shootings on him and his family. A press conference was held the day after, addressing the situation at hand. Erie County Mayor, Daria Devlin, gave her condolences to the friends and family affected by the losses.

 "I want to start by speaking directly to the families who lost loved ones last night. I am so deeply sorry," Devlin said. "What happened was horrific, and I know there is nothing I can say today that will make this any easier."

State of Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro then addressed the citizens at the conference. 

"I've spoken with Mayor Devlin and offered my Administration's full support following the tragic mass shooting in Erie last night, killing nine of our fellow Pennsylvanians," Shapiro said. "My heart breaks for this family. Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community."

This investigation is still ongoing, more details have yet to be released.
