Act Together is an article where we highlight upcoming awareness days and notable events for the month coming. We will also provide information around awareness months, and more information on what they mean to hopefully help educate and raise awareness for a range of important causes. Most of these awareness days will have messages in our Discord, filled with information about the day and what it means. We recommend joining and checking out the #well-being channel for all the information.

World Alzheimer's Month

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is recognized throughout September and is an opportunity to raise awareness around Alzheimer’s disease, how it can affect people and the impact it can have on their families and loved ones. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia and is a progressive condition, meaning symptoms can become more difficult over time. Memory loss is probably the symptom most people associate with Alzheimer’s, however it can also cause confusion, changes in behaviour or mood, difficulty communicating and problems carrying out normal everyday activities. There are millions of people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia around the world, and behind every person diagnosed there can also be family members, friends and carers who are affected by the condition. This is why having conversations and improving our understanding is so important. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, but treatments and support can help some people manage their symptoms and maintain their independence for longer. Awareness also helps us recognize that someone experiencing memory problems or confusion may need a little more patience and understanding, rather than judgement.

Deaf Awareness Month

Deaf Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness of the experiences of Deaf and hard of hearing people, while encouraging greater accessibility, understanding and inclusion within our communities. Hearing loss exists on a big spectrum and every person can experience it differently, with some people using sign language to communicate while others may use spoken language, hearing aids, cochlear implants, lip reading or a combination of different methods. It is important not to assume what someone needs simply because they are Deaf or hard of hearing, and instead allow individuals to communicate in the way that works best for them. Everyday situations that hearing people may not think twice about can create barriers, including videos without captions, announcements that are only spoken aloud or conversations where someone cannot clearly see the person speaking. Small changes such as providing captions, facing someone while talking, learning basic sign language or simply asking how you can make communication easier can make every environment in a person who is hard of hearings life much more accessible. Deaf awareness is not about treating Deaf people differently, but recognising barriers, respecting Deaf culture and communication, and making sure everyone has an equal opportunity to participate and be understood.

That's it for another month, if you ever have any questions or anything you want the Human Resources Team to raise awareness for, message Ari on discord!
