Dolly Parton, the country singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist, has been laid to rest alongside her husband, Carl Dean, following her death at the age of 80.

Parton died late last month after a brief battle with cancer. Her family confirmed that she passed away at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones. A private funeral was later held in the Tennessee city, with Parton buried beside her husband at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum. Dean, her husband of almost 60 years, died in 2025.

News of the burial caused another wave of tributes from fans, musicians and members of Parton's family. Her great niece Lainey Parton described her as "granny", remembering how she always made her feel confident enough to pursue her dreams.

She wrote that Parton had supported her throughout her life, including while she attended beauty school. For Lainey, her great aunt was more than a global superstar. She was someone who made her feel loved and believed in.

Parton's influence extended far beyond her music. Born into poverty in a one room cabin in Tennessee, she eventually became one of the most successful figures in country music. Her career produced classics including Jolene, I Will Always Love You and 9 to 5, while her distinctive voice, humour and glamorous appearance made her recognisable.

Her songwriting achievements were extraordinary. Parton earned 25 US country number ones and placed 47 albums in the country Top 10. I Will Always Love You, originally written as a farewell to country singer Porter Wagoner, later became an international hit when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard.

However, Parton's legacy was also beyond entertainment. Through the Dollywood Foundation, she established the Imagination Library, which gives free books to young children. More than 300 million books have been distributed through the programme, with around 40 million books now being given out each year across several countries.

Parton also donated $1 million towards COVID-19 research in 2020. The funding contributed to research that helped form the basis for the Moderna vaccine. Her philanthropy also included support for hospitals, disaster relief, wildlife conservation and more charitable causes.

Fans have held candlelight vigils across the USA, while flowers and messages have been left at Dolly Parton's resting place. The family has asked those wishing to honour her to consider donating to the Imagination Library instead of sending flowers.

Tennessee's governor has also announced plans to name Nashville International Airport after Parton, reflecting the extraordinary impact she had on her home state. Her legacy remains in both music and kindness. She built a career that entertained generations while using her success to help others.
