70 firefighters respond to an elderly home fire in Crewe
Firefighters from Crewe and surrounding towns have been battling to save the Beechmere Apartments elderly home.
The fire ripped out at around 16:00 and it slowly progressed into a raging fireball. The building, which was set into several operational sectors, has sustained a huge amount of damage as it has collapsed in on itself.
More than 150 elderly people were evacuated from the building. No-one was believed to be injured but it is believed that many people's pets have died in the fire and when the building collapsed.
Dramatic footage, from Facebook, shows the flames engulfing the roof in fireballs as billowing smoke fills the sky in the howling winds.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are working in the most difficult of conditions to prevent the fire from spreading into the streets and houses surrounding the building.
Poynton Fire Station tweeted a video of the situation and wrote: "Residents should remain indoors with windows closed."
