Facebook to merge messaging services
Facebook have released plans to integrate its messaging services on Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger

instagram, messenger and whatsapp messaging will soon be linked

Whilst all three will remain independent "stand alone" apps, at a different level they will be linked so messages can travel between the different services.

This means that direct messages on Instagram can also be viewed on Messenger, for example.

Facebook have stated to other news agencies that this is the start of a long process.

This plan was first unveiled in The New York Times and is thought to be a personal project of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg.

Once the plan is completed, the merge of apps would mean that someone with a Facebook account could directly communicate with someone that only has a WhatsApp account. At present this is not possible as there is no link between the two apps.

The work to merge the three apps has already begun and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019 or early 2020.

What most of ya'll aren't realizing is they're all owned by the same company, so it will be pretty fluent. Instagram is already partially merged with facebook.
